In Matthew’s theology, the kingdom of heaven is the divine perfection of the ancient kingdom of David. As such, it answers the ancient expectation that Yahweh, in fulfillment of his oath (Ps 89:3–4), would establish the kingdom of David forever (2 Sam 7:12–16) by sending a royal messiah, a new and “definitive David,”16 to reign forever as the heir to his throne (see Isa 9:6–7; Jer 23:5; Ezek 34:23–24; Hosea 3:5).
